Book Worms' Selections for January, February and March 2013

It's not too early to make some New Year's resolutions so if you want to read some interesting books in 2013 and have lively discussions with a great group of fun ladies AND work on your paper craft projects at the same time, please join the Book Worms Meet Pages' Peeps on the last Wednesday each month.  $10 includes dinner.  Here are the books selected for the next three meetings:

January 30:  Fall of Giants by Ken Follett
Ken Follett’s magnificent new historical epic begins, as five interrelated families move through the momentous dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage.

A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man’s world in the mining pits.…An American law student rejected in love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House.… A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy.…And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution.  From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes us into the inextricably entangled fates of five families—and into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again.…

February 27:  The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.   As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

March 27:  Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan
In this stunning new novel, Ian McEwan’s first female protagonist since Atonement is about to learn that espionage is the ultimate seduction.  Cambridge student Serena Frome’s beauty and intelligence make her the ideal recruit for MI5. The year is 1972. The Cold War is far from over. England’s legendary intelligence agency is determined to manipulate the cultural conversation by funding writers whose politics align with those of the government. The operation is code named “Sweet Tooth.”  Serena, a compulsive reader of novels, is the perfect candidate to infiltrate the literary circle of a promising young writer named Tom Haley. At first, she loves his stories. Then she begins to love the man. How long can she conceal her undercover life? To answer that question, Serena must abandon the first rule of espionage: trust no one.

Book Selected for November Book Club Meeting

Thanks to all of you who attended the first meeting of the Book Worms Meet Pages' Peeps Book Club.  We had fun working on individual projects, discussing favorite books, and eating pizza and delicious pumpkin cheesecake Oreos.

The next meeting will be Wednesday November 28 from 6-9pm and the book selected for discussion is "The Casual Vacancy" by JK Rowling.  Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter series and this is her first novel for adults.

Hope you can find time to read the book and join us on November 28.  Please bring a list of books you'd like to suggest for the reading list.  Future meetings will be held on the last Wednesday of the month beginning on January 30, 2013.  $10 for dinner and a ticket for a raffle prize drawing.  RSVP to Pages.

Halloween Layout

Howdy Peeps!

Welcome back! Today I have my last project for the week. In addition to the cards, I also made this layout using the "Black Widow" collection by We R Memory Keepers.

The picture in this layout has special meaning to me. It was taken at a Trunk-or-Treat event held at the school I was working at the time. These two little girls really thought I was Sonw White. They asked their mom, "How did she get here from Disneyland? Doesn't she have to go back?" They were SO excited to get to meet a "real" princess that it really touched my heart.

I had some leftover hexagons from the card I shared earlier this week so I featured some on this layout. The doily was punched from the mini Lucky 8 punch sold at Pages. I used a small corner that is hidden behind the layering on a different card that I shared yesterday! No wasted paper in this craft room!

Thanks for checking out my projects this week! As always, they are on display at Pages From the Heart.

XOXO,
Becky

Witchy Halloween Cards

Hello Peeps!

Becky again with two more Halloween cards using the "Black Widow" collection by We R Memory Keepers. This line is now in stock at Pages From the Heart.

Coming up with a sentiment with the word "witchy" in it was a little tricky but I think "Witchy Wishes" works well! The spider and sentiment are both a part of the "Witchy" stamp set. I embossed both of them with clear embossing powder for a different effect.

The witches hat came from the same "Witchy" stamp set I used in the previous card. I added orange Stickles in between the stripes because one can never have enough sparkle! The doily was cut using the new mini Lucky 8 punch by We R. These are in stock at the store and very easy to use!

I'll be back later this week with a Halloween layout with a sweet story. Thanks for reading!

XOXO,
Becky

Spooky Halloween Cards

Hi there Peeps!

Becky here and this week I will be sharing some Halloween projects I have been working on. This month I worked with the new "Black Widow" collection by We R Memory Keepers. It is now in stock at Pages From the Heart so come on in and check it out!

Today I have two cards that I made.

This card is a homage to one of my favorite movies ever, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown." I have watched this movie every Halloween for as far back as I can remember. I used a hexagon punch to punch out the shapes (although this would work well with any small, repeating shape). I pieced the pumpkin together by cutting three ovals and popping the middle oval up with foam squares. The orange letters are a new item at Pages From the Heart from Doodlebug.

For the second card, I used one of the large tags that are a part of the collection along with some scalloped squares. I used the Sew Ribbon tool by We R to add some sparkly ribbon. This tool can be found in the store.

Thanks for stopping by! I'll be back tomorrow more!

XOXO,
Becky
